The shafts of this colliery, situated at Temple Normanton, 3 miles South East of Chesterfield, were sunk 1895-1897 by Staveley Coal and Iron Co Ltd. The seams worked were the Deep Hard at 250 yards (228m) and the Blackshale at 373 yards (341m).

The colliery was closed after the 1921 miners’ strike and put up for sale. It was purchased by the Clay Cross Co Ltd in 1923/1924 and worked until nationalisation in 1947.

The National Coal Board worked Bonds Main for a couple of years extracting 247,276 tons, but due to production falling rapidly each year the colliery closed in May 1949.
