This colliery at Middleton was worked by the Chamber Colliery Co. Ltd between 1879 and 1897. The seams worked were the Bent and Black Mines. Alkrington employed 62 people underground and 10 on the surface in 1895, but this fell to 25 and 8 in 1896, when the colliery was discontinued. It was abandoned on September 9th 1897.
