COLLIERY BROOMFIELD (see also LANGTREE)
LOCATION 1100 yards west of LNWR West Coast Main Line and ¼ mile north of Standish Junction.

Shafts
Two shafts sunk c.1850 to 55 yards to work Ince Four Feet and Ince Seven Feet Mines (the latter of poor quality).
One shaft widened to 15 feet diameter by Wigan Coal & Iron Co. and deepened to Arley Mine at 1105 feet. Linked to Langtree Colliery and served as upcast ventilation. Fault struck at 167 yards – ground generally faulted. Haigh Yard Mine intersected at 698 feet.

Winding
Twin cylinder horizontal engine by Haigh Foundry installed by W.C.& I. Co. Wooden headgear approx. 55 feet high.

Pumping
Flat rods and two sets of bucket pumps. (possibly operated by a beam engine)

Compressed Air
Horizontal compressor, appears to have been non-condensing.

Ventilation
Initially by furnace. Fan installed c.1880, by Walker Bros., 27 feet diameter, 177,750cfm., 4 inches wg at 85rpm. Condensing engine 189ihp at 40rpm. New fan shaft supplied by Walker Bros., 22-12-00 (breakdown).

Boilers
Five Lancashire. Octagonal chimney approx. 100 feet in height.

Seams Worked (WCI Co.)
Peacock, Cannel, King, Haigh Yard, Arley – all in badly faulted ground. Final working in Arley Mine by extracting shaft pillars.

CLOSURE – Abandoned March 1932.
