The colliery was situated half a mile south of Rotherham town centre, the site is now under the link road to the motorway.

Shaft sinking commenced in 1890 with coal production starting in 1894. The colliery was owned by John Brown & Co who were steel makers in Sheffield.

The colliery passed to the National Coal Board in 1947 and production continued until its closure in 1954.
