A small area of coal in the Upper Howgate Edge Grit, about 150 feet below the summit of Pen-y-ghent, is shown on geological maps. The only coal pits shown by the Ordnance Survey, however, are just outside that area, suggesting that the miners were looking for the Fountains Fell coal.
