Nearer Skipton, the Grassington Grit forms the escarpment which includes Thorpe, Cracoe and Rylstone Fells. The Caton Coal outcrops along much of the dip slope, but has been extensively worked on Thorpe Fell, near Burnsall. A smaller area of coal was worked from four shafts on Deer Gallows Plain in Embsay township. One of them was described as ‘New Pit’ in 1853.
