The Top Mere coalfield, to the north of Kettlewell, worked a seam in the Lower Howgate Edge or Grassington Grit, which here is unconformable on the Main Limestone. The coalfield extends into Starbotton and to the head of Coverdale, where it has been extensively worked as far north as East Stone Gill.
