Blue Hills Mine, located in Trevellas Coombe, lies at the end of the Jericho Valley.

The mine, a group of older mines, was started in the early 18th century and includes Wheal Betsy. It was closed around about 1780 due to the excessive cost of dewatering the mine.

With the advent of steam pumping engines it was restarted under the name East Polberro in 1813 and became Blue Hills in 1836.

The mine worked tin from the Baldhu Lode from Blue Burrow Shaft, the Pink Lode from Engine, Polyear’s Wheal Joy and Letcher’s shafts, and Betsy Lodes from Wheal Betsy Engine Shaft. Straggler’s Lode was also worked.

The mine employed between 50 and 150 men and was worked up to its closure in 1897 due to cheap tin imports from elsewhere in the world.

An abortive attempt was made to rework the mine in 1926.

The mine site is now a museum, for further information please see:
