South Wheal Ellen, Porthtowan Area, worked from 1845 to 1861, producing 9,000 tons of copper, some lead and some zinc. There was a brief attempt to reopen the mine in 1907, but this was unsuccessful.

The engine house at Wheal Ellen is remarkable in that the top of the stack was castellated.
