GADLYS. Aberdare, Glamorganshire. 4th. October, 1871.

The colliery was the property of the Gadlys Company and was known as Wayne’s Pit. There were twenty-three men in the workings when there was a loud report. David William, the night overman led the search and it was found that men had lost their lives. The “Colliery Guardian” says there were five victims but the local papers list only four. The debris was cleared from the mine in about an hour.

Those who lost their lives were:

  • William Jones aged 38 years.
  • Thomas Price aged 72 years.
  • George Palfreyman aged 13 years.
  • Edward Merry aged 29 years.
  • Thomas Hamlett aged 11 years.
