NANTYGLO. Blaina, Monmouthshire, c.7th. December, 1837.

An explosion was reported at Bailey’s mine that claimed seven lives. The Burial Register at St. Peter’s records eight burials at that time. An eruption of gas was said to have been ignited at a candle.

Those who were buried on the 8th December were:

  • John Parkes aged 46 years, of Garnfach,
  • David Parkes aged 18 years, of Garnfach,
  • John Parkes aged 16 years, of Garnfach,
  • Thomas Jones aged 20 years, of Gwainhelygan,
  • Morgan Lewis aged 31 years, of Brynamawr.

Those buried on the 10th. December:

  • Margaret Davies aged 18 years, of Nantyglo
  • Jane Legg aged 13 years, of Nantyglo
  • Griffith Davies aged 23 years of Penygarn.
