Shafts
Two shafts sunk to Cannel Mine, 1848. Deepened to Arley Mine at 315 yards, 1860.

Winding
Twin cylinder vertical engine by James Nasmyth, Patricroft.
Conical winding drum 18 feet diameter max., centre brake path. Cylinders 24 inches x 60 inches, slide valves. Two double deck cages carrying two – 6 cwt tubs per deck.

Ventilation – Furnace

Boilers – four egg-end, 5 feet diameter x 36 feet long.

Accidents & Disasters
On 12th September 1865 a accident occurred while eight persons were ascending the pit. The round wire rope got off the drum and  the rope was either broken by the fall or severed by the eccentrics of the shaft. The cage with the men in fell 270 yards to the bottom of the shaft, all were killed. The full report can be found here.
