Cwmtillery, Ebbw Fach Valley 216065

There were levels called Cwmtillery’s owned by Thomas Powell and T.P. Price in 1858. This level employed 53 men underground and 7 men on the surface when managed by D. Lewis in 1896 when owned by the Cwmtillery Red Ash Colliery Company of Cwmtillery. In 1899 it employed 53 men and in 1900 it employed 67 men working underground and 11 men at the surface of the mine with Mr. Lewis still the manager. It is shown on the 1902 map of the Monmouthshire part of the Coalfield as still being owned by the Cwmtillery Red Ash Colliery Company. It was producing house coals and employed 60 men in 1902.

It was shut for the whole of 1903 due to a strike and was lying idle in 1907/08. Not listed in the 1920s or early 1930s, but in 1938 it employed 168 men underground and 18 men on the surface the manager was J.R. Jones. In 1943 it employed 89 men working underground and 19 men working at the surface of the mine with the same manager as Cwmtillery Colliery, R. Watkins.

On nationalisation in 1947 it is shown as being owned by the Cwmtillery Red Ash Colliery Company and employing 115 working the Red Ash (Tillery or Brithdir) seam. The manager was R. Watkins.

It closed in 1950.
