This database was compiled for the NMRS Records by searching the indexes to Dissolved (joint stock) Companies, at the National Archives (formerly the Public Record Office) at Kew. The user must be aware that, because they were compiled by searching for certain key words (i.e. coal, colliery, mine, mining) these listings do not contain those mining companies which used personal names only, for example, Barber, Walker & Co. Ltd. For convenience, they have been split into ‘Coal’ and ‘Metalliferous‘ mines.

The records have been supplemented with references to companies taken from the Mining Journal and other sources (those entries without a BT prefix) by Roger Burt and Peter Waite.

The full reference, for example, NA(PRO) BT31/3376/20159, tells us that the source is the National Archives at Kew. It gives the Class Number = BT31 (Board of Trade, Dissolved Companies), Box number = 3376, and the Company number = 20159 (Craven Moor United Mining Company Ltd). This will allow the archivists to find the documents for you.

BT31 These are the files of dissolved companies registered with the Board of Trade from 1856 onwards.

The files cover those dissolved companies of all kinds incorporated between 1856 and 1931 and dissolved before 1932; some files of companies incorporated between 1856 and 1900 and dissolved between 1933 and 1948; files of public and private non-exempt companies incorporated up to 1970 and dissolved between 1948 and 1971 with a one per cent sample of files of exempt private companies.

BT41 This series contains the files of all Joint Stock Companies which were registered under the Act of 1844 and dissolved before 1856, and of those re-registered under the 1856 Act
