John Ivor Grey was killed in action in France on September 15th, 1916, whilst serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Northumberland Fusiliers. He was 20 years of age and had been in the army for about 12 months.

Before joining up he had been apprenticed at the Broomhill Collieries, Northumberland, and had spent part of his time as a student at Armstrong College, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where he matriculated in 1918.

Mr. Grey was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1915.
