Lead and zinc mines were developed near this small Perthshire village, at the junction of the A82 and A85 roads in Strath Fillan. The area consists of metamorphic rocks crossed by a vein running to the north east. On the west side of the fault are quartsites and quartzose-flags, while on its east side are silvery-grey, soft, micaceous-schists.

In autumn 1988 underground prospecting for gold began at nearby Cononish and mining is due to commence in 2013.
