Lionel Rushton Baxter died at Brazzaville in the French Congo on August 17th, 1939, at the age of 32.

He received his technical education at Leeds University, Where he graduated in 1928 with the degree of B.Sc. with second class honours in geology. On completion of a post-graduate course he joined the staff of the Rhodesian Congo Border Concession., Ltd., as geologist, and subsequently held similar appointments with other Rhodesian companies.

In 1937 he received the degree of Ph.D. conferred by the University of London, and the same year became field manager of the Nyasaland Division of the Anglo-American Corporation of South Africa, Ltd.

Dr. Baxter was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1938.
