Maximilian Otto Baumann was reported ‘missing,’ July, 1917, whilst serving as 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps in France, but his death was not presumed until some time later.

He underwent technical training at the South African School of Mines and Technology at Johannesburg, and received the diploma in mining engineering in 1913. He was in the Orange River Colony at the outbreak of war, at which period he was 28 years of age.

Mr. Baumann was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1912.
