Peter John Bailey died in a motor accident in Northern Rhodesia on 17th July, 1957, at the age of 25.

Mr. Bailey was educated at Marist Brothers College at Inanda, Johannesburg, and studied chemical engineering between 1949 and 1955 at the University of the Witwatersrand, gaining the B.Sc. (Eng.) degree.

He joined Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Ltd., Northern Rhodesia, in February, 1956, as an assay chemist in the assay office, and in June of that year was appointed metallurgical assistant in the leach plant. He held this post at the time of his death.

Mr. Bailey joined the Institution in 1957 as a Student.
