Robert Henry Byles died at his residence, Shrubs Hill, Sunningdale, on September 9th, 1911, at the age of 51.

He was born at Hartlepool, and had been engaged in mining since 1882, when he became connected with the Kimberley Central Diamond Co. From 1887 to 1892 he was engaged in examining, reporting and developing work in the Transvaal and in California, and for some years acted as chief engineer to the Adventurers’ Syndicate, Throgmorton Street, E.C.

For several years previous to his death, though in failing health, he practised as a consulting engineer in the City. He was a Fellow of the Geological Society.

Mr. Byles was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1893, and transferred to Membership in 1895.
