Cecil Courtis died on 7th June, 1959, at the age of 60.
Mr. Courtis studied at the Camborne School of Metalliferous Mining between 1919 and 1922, and on completing the course went to the Gold Coast, where he did underground sampling and surveying work with Abbontiakoon Gold Mining Co., Ltd.
In June, 1923, he was appointed chief surveyor for African Manganese, Ltd., and in the following year he was engaged by Akim, Ltd., on surveying, prospecting and valuation. Mr. Courtis joined Mongu (Nigeria) Tin Mines, Ltd., in November, 1925, and in 1927 engaged in prospecting for Tanganyika Concessions, Ltd. Mr. Courtis worked for Consolidated African Selection Trust in Sierra Leone from 1935 to 1939.
During the war he served with the 3rd Field Company, Gold Coast Regiment of the Royal West African Frontier Force, and on demobilization re-joined Consolidated African Selection Trust, Ltd., on the Gold Coast. He returned to the United Kingdom in 1950 to live in London.
Mr. Courtis joined the Institution as a Student in 1922 and was elected an Associate Member in 1930.
