Charles Russell Chaffey was killed in action in March, 1917, whilst serving as 2nd Lieutenant with the Manchester Regiment. He was 28 years of age.

He studied mining at McGill University, Montreal, from 1908 to 1911, and filled in his vacations with practical work in Michigan and British Columbia. From 1911 to 1915 he was engaged in surveying and civil engineering; and before joining the Army he spent a year in London, studying surveying and metallurgy at the South-Western Polytechnic.

Mr. Chaffey was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1916.
