Francis Coulthard died at Whitehaven on December 10th, 1921.

In 1876 he became an apprenticed mining engineer with Mr. Woolcock, of Lowther Street, Whitehaven, and in 1882 he passed his examination as a certificated colliery manager at Newcastle, and was appointed manager of the Asby Colliery and of the Whinnah Iron Company’s mines. At the same time, for eleven years he acted as colliery manager and general assistant to Mr. Woolcock.

In 1892 he was appointed general manager of the Marbella Iron Ore Co.’s mines in Southern Spain, and from 1897 to 1901 he was in general practice as a mining engineer. In the latter year he acted as prospector for the Tharsis Sulphur & Copper Co., examining and reporting on various mining properties, and in 1903 he became general manager of the Pure Salt Co., Ltd., at Remolinos, Prov. of Zaragoza, Spain. In 1996 he was appointed temporary manager of the Esperanza Copper mines, Prov. of Huelva, and later was engaged with the Zalamea Copper Co., Ltd., Prov. of Huelva.

Mr. Coulthard was elected a Member of the Institution in 1908.
