Harold Philippe Jeans Childs died in 1915 of wounds received in action at Gallipoli, whilst serving as Lieutenant with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He was 28 years of age.

When the war broke out he had completed his third year as a student at the Otago University School of Mines, and he promptly joined the forces that were being raised in his country to assist the Imperial Government. After preliminary training in the ranks, he was sent with his unit in the spring of 1915 to take part in the operations that were being carried on in Eastern Europe.

Mr. Childs was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1914.
