Ian Mackay Dempster was killed in action on February 24th, 1918, whilst serving as 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps. On the date mentioned he was attacked by nine aeroplanes of a German pursuit flight, when he was severely wounded. His pilot was forced to land the machine in the enemy lines, where Mr. Dempster succumbed a few hours later.

He was 20 years of age, and previous to his joining the Royal Flying Corps had studied for a year at the Camborne School of Mines.

Mr. Dempster was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1917.
