Herbert Anthony Evans died at Panama on April 28th, 1914, at the age of 47.

On leaving school in 1884 he entered the Portsmouth Dockyard with the intention pf qualifying as a naval engineer, but he abandoned the idea in 1886 and crossed the Atlantic to serve an apprenticeship in some locomotive shops in America. On completion of his articles he came to London, and during 1890 and 1891 studied electrical engineering at the Faraday House College.

From 1902 to 1909 he was engaged by the Tolima Mining Co., in the Republic of Colombia, as assistant superintendent, during which period he was employed in mining, milling, assaying, Surveying and the erection of machinery, while for 9 months of the same he was in sole charge of the mine.

In 1909 he returned to England and took the full mining course at the Camborne School of Mines, and subsequently held the positions of manager to the Tolima Silver mine, the Frontino and Bolivia, gold mines and the Potosi silver-tin mines respectively. Returning to England, he went to Spain on a reporting trip, and after that was engaged first in the offices of Messrs. Charleton & Dickinson, and afterwards in those of Messrs. Pellew-Harvey & Co. For the latter firm he made a reporting trip to Colombia in 1911, with regard to the technical management of the Frontino and Bolivia Co.’s Mines. In 1912 he was appointed manager of the London and Pacific Petroleum Co., Ltd., at Negritos, Peru.

In April, 1914, he was compelled to undergo a very serious operation, and died a fortnight later in the Ancon Hospital, Panama.

Mr. Evans was elected a Member of the Institution in 1899.
