John Francis Elwes died in British Guiana in 1909.

He was a graduate in Mining of the Truro Mining School, and was for a time engaged as Assistant Mine Surveyor under Messrs. Henderson & Son of Truro. For two years he held appointments in West Africa, and on his return home in 1902 he entered the laboratory of Mr. G.T. Holloway, where he remained for some months. He subsequently held positions in various parts of the world, his last appointment being in British Guinna.

Mr. Elwes was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1903.
