Walter Bowen Evans died at Trecastle, S. Wales, on October 31st, 1923, aged 61 years.

He graduated at the State School of Mines, Colorado, U.S.A., in 1882, obtaining certificates for assaying and metallurgical chemistry, and between the years 1884 and 1889, he was assistant metallurgist, chief chemist, and assayer to the Omaha and Grant Smelting & Refining Co., Denver, Colo. In the last mentioned year he established an office in Denver, and until the close of 1895 he was engaged in examining and reporting on properties throughout most of the western states and territories of the U.S.A.

During the period of his career in America, he occupied several important positions on Government Commissions, and achieved at considerable amount of work in the collection of mining statistics. At the beginning of 1896, he went to New Zealand as metallurgist and assayer to the Consolidated Gold Fields of New Zealand, Ltd., and as assistant to the consulting engineer. He came to England during 1908, and in 1907 went to Australia for several years. In 1912 he retired from active professional work, and eventually settled down in his native country.

Mr. Evans was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1897.
