Arthur Clifford Gaved died of black-water fever in Northern Nigeria on June 12th, 1928, at the age of 40.

He entered for the full mining course at the Camborne School of Mines in 1905, and in his third year he obtained the 1st prize silver medal of the City and Guilds Institute (raising and preparation of ores examination). In September, 1908, he was appointed assayer-surveyor for the Wheal Commerce Tin Mines, Ltd., Cornwall; in August, 1910, assistant mining engineer for the Tresavean Mines, Ltd.; and in October, 1911, assistant surveyor for the St. Ives Consolidated Mines, Ltd.

In April, 1912, he went to Northern Nigeria as assistant manager for the Tin and Trading Co. of Nigeria, Ltd. Three years later he was appointed sampler for the Broomassie Mines, Ltd., in the Gold Coast Colony, and shortly afterwards transferred his services to the Abosso Gold Mining Co., Ltd., in the same Colony. He returned to Northern Nigeria, to work with the Offin River Gold Estates, Ltd., and subsequently with another company.

Mr. Gaved was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1916.
