Claude Waller Goldsmith was killed in action in October, 1940, at the age of 23.

He was born in South Africa, and was the eldest son of Dr. A.W. Goldsmith, senior medical officer to the Union Corporation group of mines. He was educated at Cheltenham College, England, and entered the Royal School of Mines in 1936, at the same time joining the London University Air Squadron. He took a keen interest in sport while at the School, was a member of the Imperial College Rowing Club, and rowed in the senior eight at Henley in 1937 and 1938.

He had been elected Student-President of the Royal School of Mines in 1940, but meanwhile joined the Royal Air Force and eventually attained the rank of Flying Officer.

Mr. Goldsmith was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1938.
