Henry Noël Grist was killed in action on May 27th, 1917, when serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Tunnelling Section of the Royal Engineers.

He was 31 years of age, and was educated at Birmingham University, where he obtained his diploma in Mining in 1907. He afterwards spent two years as assistant to the manager of the Greenside Lead Mines in Cumberland, and a further two years as surveyor at the Darien Gold Mine, Panama. In 1913, he went to West Africa and was engaged for rather more than a year in prospecting and mining in Nigeria and the Cameroons.

Mr. Grist was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1909, and transferred to Associateship in 1914.
