Hugh Gemmell died in Greece on July 22nd, 1940, at the age of 59.

He was born, in New Zealand and received his education at, Alexandra School, Otago. From 1896 to 1901 he gained experience in a repair foundry and then as assistant superintendent and superintendent of dredging and sluicing companies inn Otago district.

After three years of similar work in New South Wales he went to West Africa and was engaged in prospecting and inspecting properties, and dredging in Ashanti and French West Africa. After a, brief interlude spent-in Tierra de Fuego, South America, he returned to West Africa to join the staff of the Niger Co. His latest engagement was in Macedonia.

Mr Gemmell was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1914.
