Matthew Hamilton Gray died in September, 1915, aged 61 years.

He was one of the earliest members of the Institution, and was educated at the Royal School of Mines, where he obtained the Associateship in mining.

His professional work took him far afield, and he did much inspecting and reporting work in Chile and Peru on silver, copper and coal mines; and likewise on the nitrate and borax deposits of Chile. He also reported on gold, silver and cinnabar mines in California and Nevada; and for three years was mining engineer to the Borneo Co., Ltd., where he had charge of the cinnaber mine and reduction works, and carried out a considerable amount of prospecting and exploring.

He subsequently held the position of engineer-in-charge of the Silvertown Telegraph Cable Works, and for many years resided at Lessness Park, Abbey Wood, Kent.

Mr. Gray was elected a Member of the Institution in 1892.
