Montague Groves died in England at the beginning of 1915, aged 50 years.

His early training was that of a mechanical engineer, but afterwards he took up the mining profession and went to Rhodesia, where he spent the whole of his professional career. His first engagement, in 1892, was as manager of the Salamanda Mine, Hartley; and he carried out the prospecting of various other properties in the district.

From 1893 to 1894 he was engaged on the development work of the Beatrice Mine and Concession Hill properties for the Mashonaland Central Gold Mining Co., and during the following two years was manager and mining superintendent for Moore’s Rhodesia Concessions, Ltd. In 1898, he returned to the Beatrice Mine as manager, and in the year following was transferred to the Quagga and Grand Manica Properties of the Grand Manica Development Co., with which company he remained until 1901. Early in 1902 he entered the services of the Mashonaland Consolidated, Ltd., as resident engineer and manager, and in 1904 took over the management of the Nelly Mine for Rhodesia Consolidated, Ltd., to whom he subsequently became consulting engineer. His last appointment previous to returning to England was as manager of the Selukwe Columbia Gold Mine, Ltd.

Mr. Groves was elected a Member of the Institution in 1910.
