James Thomas Hawes died on 4th May, 1952, in Madrid, at the age of 59.

He received his technical training at the Royal School of Mines from 1909 to 1913 and from 1919 to 1920, and gained the A.R.S.M. in mining and the D.I.C.

Mr. Hawes spent the whole of his mining career in Spain, in 1913 taking up the position of assistant manager of the oil shale mines of the Castellon Oil Co., Ltd., Spain, later becoming mine manager. He left in 1916 to join Carbones Minerales de Postalrulio as mining engineer in their lignite mines, and returned to England in 1919 to work for a further year at the Royal School of Mines. On returning to Spain in 1920 he was appointed assistant underground manager at Minas del Centenillo, S.A., at Linares. He was promoted acting underground manager in 1933 and general manager in 1935, and at the time of his death had held that position for seventeen years.

Mr. Hawes was elected a Student of the Institution in 1912, and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1923 and to Membership in 1946.
