John Hunter died on 11th December, 1962, at the age of 61.
Mr. Hunter began his professional career at Birkacre Colliery, Lancashire, in September, 1914, where he remained until 1934. From 1921 he undertook a mining course at Wigan and District Mining and Technical College, gaining the Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency in 1927. In 1925 he was appointed assistant to the manager and later acting colliery undermanager.
In 1934 Mr. Hunter was appointed mining engineer with Maroc, Ltd., Sierra Leone, where he undertook alluvial and lode work, and in 1937 joined Gold and Base Metal Mines of Nigeria, Ltd., Sierra Leone, as mining engineer.
From 1940 to 1942 Mr. Hunter was engaged in the alluvial mining of gold in Sierra Leone on his own account, and in the following year was appointed engineer in charge of underground shelters with the Sierra Leone Mines Department, Freetown. He then joined Bisichi Tin Co., Ltd., Nigeria, as mining engineer, and remained with the company until taking up a similar position with The British Aluminium Co., Ltd., on the Gold Coast in 1948. He was promoted to the position of senior mining engineer and acting general manager, and then to that of general manager, in the following year. Mr. Hunter remained with The British Aluminium Co., Ltd., until his death, at which time he was Ghana general manager.
Mr. Hunter was elected to Associate Membership of the Institution in 1939.
