Raoul Livingston Hewston died about the middle of 1940 in the Gold Coast Colony, at the age of 57.

In 1901 he entered a four years’ course at the University of California, and subsequently obtained three years’ experience in mine surveying, metallurgy and plant construction in the States of California and Oregon.

In 1908 he went to South Africa, first as sampler at Simmer Deep and later as shift-boss at Simmer East and Knights Deep. After a year spent as engineer in charge of prospecting and exploration of tin properties, he returned to the Rand as mine captain on the Simmer and Jack, for a period of seven years. From February, 1919, he was occupied for nearly two years as manager of a property in the Belgian Congo, and for a year as manager of Prestea Block ‘A’ on the Gold Coast. Returning to the Rand he was for about three years manager of New State Areas and New Pioneer gold mining companies, followed by eighteen months as manager of the Rustenburg and Potgietersrust Platinum in the Transvaal, and two‘ and a half years as assistant consulting engineer and, later, manager, of the Rhodesia Chrome Corporation. In 1930 he returned to the Rand as mine captain on Sub-Nigel, Ltd., and in 1933 he was appointed underground manager and, later, general manager, of Taquah and Abosso. At the time of his death he was manager of Marlu Gold Mining Areas, Gold Coast.

Mr. Hewston was elected a Member of the Institution in 1938.
