Major Augustus Huws Rocyn Jones, South African Engineer Corps, was killed in action in Italy on April 29th, 1945, at the age of 36.

He was born at Newport, Monmouthshire, and was educated at Leys School and Downing College, Cambridge. He obtained his M.A. degree and entered the Royal School of Mines in 1930, graduating with the A.R.S.M. in 1935 and B.Sc. (London). In the same year he went to South Africa and joined the staff of the Robinson Deep mine, Johannesburg.

Soon after the outbreak of war he volunteered for the South African Engineer Corps, and served in Somaliland, Ethiopia, North Africa and Italy, being mentioned in despatches early in 1942. After a course at the Middle East Staff School he was promoted major in the 8th Field Squadron, Union Defence Force.

Major Rocyn Jones was an international hockey player for Wales and was also known in rugby and cricketing circles.

He was elected to Studentship of the Institution in 1933.
