Hans Knutsen died at his home at Unley, South Australia, on April 10th, 1936, at the age of 79.

A Norwegian by birth, he obtained the diploma in mining engineering of the University of Christiana; and was for three years the Danish Government Geologist in Greenland. He explored the eastern coast of Greenland with Captain Holm, and for this work he was on his return to Norway created Knight or the Order of Dannehrog. Then followed two years of study at Freiberg, where he obtained the diploma, of metallurgical engineer.

In 1887 he went to Australia, metallurgical chemist and assayer to the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. The rest of his life was spent in Australia, as metallurgist and manager of various mines in the Commonwealth.

Mr. Knutsen was elected a Member of the Institution in 1899.
