Sydney Harland Loram died suddenly in Chile on 19th October, 1955, after an accident. He was over 80 years of age.

He studied at the City and Guilds of London Technical College from 1890 to 1892 and then underwent a course of training in the smelting works and assay offices of Messrs. Johnson & Sons, London, assayers to the Royal Mint. Mr. Loram went to Chile in 1894 and had remained there ever since.

He began in the position of chemist and assayer to Atacama Mineral Co., Ltd., in Taltal, three years later becoming general manager of the company. He did gold and copper mining privately in Chile in 1900, and in 1901 was appointed general manager of Anglo Chilean Exploration Co., Ltd. He left that position in 1905 to practise as consulting mining and metallurgical engineer in Valparaiso, and managed mines for Messrs. Gibbs & Co. His work took him over the South American continent. He continued actively in his practice until his death. He had, in the earlier part of his career, contributed papers to the technical press.

Mr. Loram was elected to Membership of the Institution in 1909. He was also a member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and of the Sociedad Nacional de Mineria de Chile.
