Douglas Brereton Mackenzie died at Kano, Northern Nigeria, on December 10th, 1941, at the age of 35.

He received his technical training at the Heriot-Watt College and Edinburgh University, and in 1923 was appointed as engineer to the Mondego Tin Syndicate, Ltd., and three years later became manager of the Goudar Tin Mines, Ltd., in Portugal, with which company he was associated for a considerable period. Subsequently he went to Northern Nigeria, and on the outbreak of the war he joined H.M. Forces, and at the date of his death he held the rank of Captain in an Engineer Unit of the Royal West African Frontier Force.

Captain Mackenzie was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1925 and was elected an Associate in 1927.
