Eugene Gavey McKeown died in March, 1917, whilst serving as an Engine-room Artificer in the Royal Navy.

He was 21 years of age, and for some years had worked as an apprentice at the Luipaards Vlei Estate and Gold Mining Co., Krugersdorp, Transvaal, attending evening classes at the South African School of Mines and Technology. He came to England at the end of 1915, and from that time until his death, was engaged in engineering work in the Navy.

Mr. McKeown was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1914.
