John Archibald Mclntyre died in hospital in Penang on 14th February, 1960, at the age of 69.
Mr. Mclntyre was born in Melbourne, and at the age of 16 began working as a cadet for Australian Gold Dredging Co., Ltd. By 1916 he was manager of a group of four tin dredges in New South Wales and Queensland belonging to the company. He also prospected in New Guinea (Papua) and the Gulf country of Northern Australia. He left Australian Gold Dredging Co., after seventeen years to join Bundi Tin Dredging Co. (N.L.), as assistant manager of their mine in Trengganu, Malaya, having charge of tin dredging operations there and designing and erecting new plant. In 1931 Mr. McIntyre went to Siam, and was closely associated with tin dredging companies there for the rest of his life.
From 1931 to 1934 he was general manager of Ratruh Basin Tin Dredging Co., Ltd., Sichon, and mine manager of Rangeng Tin, during 1935, and of Tinsongkhla, N.L., at Ban Din Lan from 1935 to 1941. His longest connexion was as mine superintendent of the Tongkah Harbour group, a post he assumed in 1948 and retained until his death.
He also held the position of consulting engineer for Takuapa Valley Tin Dredging Ltd., from 1956 to 1959. He joined the board of directors of Tahman Hydraulic Tin, Ltd., Malaya, in 1954.
While in Siam Mr. McIntyre served on the Committee of the Association of British Commonwealth Mining Interests in Siam.
Mr. Mclntyre was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1931, and became a Member in 1956. He had also been a member of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
