Patrick Austin Murray was killed in action in, France on July 1st, 1916.

In May, 1915, he received a commission in the Northumberland Fusiliers, and, at the time of his death, which occurred when he was 34 years of age, he had attained to the rank of Captain.

Mr. Murray was educated at Durham University College of Science, where he took the prescribed course in mining. Early in 1905 he went to West Africa, where the greater part of his professional work was done, his engagements with two Gold Coast companies covering the whole of the next nine years. From January, 1906, to May, 1910, he held an appointment with the Bibiani United, Ltd and filled in succession the positions of general assistant, sampler and assistant mine captain, acting mine captain and mine captain. Towards the close of 1910 he engaged himself to the Broomassie Mines, Ltd., and remained with this company for four years.

Mr. Murray was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1910.
