Rowland George Mercer died in a motor-cycle accident in South Africa on 13th December, 1958, at the age of 23.

Mr. Mercer was educated at Stamford School and studied at Birmingham University from 1954 to 1957, graduating with a B.Sc. honours degree in mining. He left England for South Africa in August, 1957, to join Anglo American Corporation of South Africa, Ltd., as assistant surveyor at President Brand Gold Mining Co., Ltd., Welkom, Orange Free State. He also worked for a short time in the ventilation department.

Mr. Mercer joined the Institution as a Student in 1955.
