Francis Cecil Newnum died at the age of 77 on 12th March, 1960, at a Southsea nursing home.

Mr. Newnum attended Merchant Taylors’ School, London, between 1894 and 1902, and gained a science exhibition to Pembroke College, Cambridge. He graduated with B.A. natural science tripos in 1905. He then studied assaying, metallurgy, mining and surveying at the Royal School of Mines for a year.

 He worked for a few months in 1906 as assayer and surveyor to Société des Mines de Cuivre de Campanorio, Province of Huelva, Spain, and then left for Peru to take a similar position with Société des Mines de Tuco Cheira. In November, 1908, he joined Colombian Mining and Exploration Co., Ltd., working in various capacities at Marmato mines until 1911. Mr. Newnum was engaged by Peruvian Consolidated Gold Trust, Ltd., as assistant manager at the Parcoy gold mines, Provincia de Pataz, Peru, from 1912 to 1913, and then became manager. He was later associated with Mr. A. Gordon Plews, M.I.M.M. as technical advisers to Peruvian Associated Gold Mines, Ltd., with offices in London. Mr. Newnum held the position of consulting engineer to that company from 1936 to 1940.

He joined the Institution as a Student in 1906, and was elected to Associate Membership in 1914.
