Harold Edward Pope was killed in action on August 24th, 1918, at the age of 36 years. He joined the Army in 1915 and was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery. At the time of his death he had attained the rank of Captain, and was also the holder of the Military Cross.

He was educated at Winchester and at New College, Oxford, where he graduated with first class honours in natural science. He afterwards proceeded to the Royal School of Mines and obtained the Associateship in 1906. He then accepted an appointment with the Borneo Co., of Sarawak, as assistant engineer on their mines at Bau and Bidi, and worked there for four years.

In 1911 he joined the staff of a Dutch company in Sumatra, in the capacity of mining engineer and geologist, and remained with them until the spring of 1915, when he resigned his position to return home and join the Army.

Mr. Pope was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1906, and was transferred to Associateship in 1913.
