Hugh MacIlroy Paterson died as a result of a rockburst, at Champion Reef mine, Kolar Gold Field, India, on 24th November, 1947, at the age of 40.

After being apprenticed to United Collieries, Ltd., in Scotland, from 1924 in 1929, he was appointed mine surveyor to the Company and held that post until April, 1935. He then joined the staff of Champion Reef Gold Mines of India, Ltd, as junior assistant surveyor, and in 1938 was made assistant underground agent, the position which he held at the time of his death.

Mr. Paterson was elected to Associateship of the Institution in 1941.
