James Penrose Prout died in India on December 1st, 1920, at the age of 31.

He received his technical education at the Redruth School of Mines 1908-1911, and on completion of his course he was for a few months assayer at the St. David’s gold mine in Merionethshire. In November, 1911, he was appointed assistant manager of the Bwlchglas lead mine in Cardiganshire, a position which he held for nearly three years, when he became, in September, 1914, clerk of the works for Mr. Arthur Carkeek at the Ernesettle Camp, Plymouth.

In May, 1915, he was appointed engineer-in-charge of the erection of sulphuric acid plant for Messrs. Huntington, Heberlein & Co., Ltd., at Messrs. Nobel’s Explosives works, Pembrey factory, Carmarthenshire.

In October, 1915, he accepted the position of assistant surveyor and assistant underground agent for the Ooregum G. M. Co. of India, Ltd., at Oorgaum, Kolar Goldfield, S. India. In 1918, he joined the survey department of the same company and in 1920 he was promoted to be chief surveyor.

Mr. Prout was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1918, and transferred to Associateship in 1919.
