Gunner John Pearson Parker Pattinson was killed in action in North Africa at the end of 1942, at the age of 36.

He began his mining career in Rhodesia in 1923, and worked on the Sabiwa and Sherwood Star mines before taking a post as shiftsman at the Cam and Motor mine in 1926, where he remained for over six years, From 1934 onwards he managed various of the smaller mines in Southern Rhodesia, and was engineer on the Berea, mine, at Belingwe when he joined the Forces in June, 1942.

Mr. Pattinson was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1938.
